Decency and cultural sensibilities in the UAE

Look at what is acceptable, and what is not, in terms of decency and cultural sensibilities in the UAE.
For a conservative Muslim country, the UAE generally has a tolerant attitude towards what residents and visitors can wear and do.
  1. Kissing in public in the UAE is prohibited, and some people have appeared in court for this.
  2. But holding hands in public is allowed.
  3. Acts of public intimacy are especially frowned upon. A couple who had sexual intercourse in a car in Dubai were sentenced to jail and deportation in 2006.
  4. People are advised not to wear very short shorts or skirts above the knee.
  5. Some sports require freedom of movement and it is acceptable for players to wear less clothing. However, one downside is that some females have complained about men staring at them during games.
  6. The wearing of proper swimwear at the UAE's many beaches is fine.
  7. However, see-through swimwear or underwear instead of swimming costumes is not allowed.
  8. Bikinis on the beach are acceptable, but women should not go topless or wear thongs and will need to cover up when they leave the beach.
  9. Signs can be seen at beaches and malls, advising people on what is acceptable, and what is not.
  10. The wide range of bars and nightclubs in the UAE allow people to let loose, behind closed doors. But be aware that after the night has finished you should make your way home as quietly as possible.
  11. Some major social and sporting events have been criticised due to people drinking too much alcohol and behaving inappropriately.
  12. Drinking at public sport events is fine, but people should take care not to get drunk, aggressive or too loud.
  13. Men wearing women's clothing is strictly prohibited and people caught cross dressing will be punished by law.
  14. National dress, like the Scottish kilts shown here, are fine.
