Dubai The UAE plans to search for uranium in the Western region, the preferred site for the country’s nuclear energy plants, according to Mohammad Al Hammadi, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corp (ENEC).
A report in Al Ittihad newspaper yesterday quoted Al Hammadi as saying this on the sidelines of the Nuclear Energy Forum in Abu Dhabi this week, Bloomberg reported.
The event at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre attracted 400 residents, students and government representatives from across the UAE, WAM reported. Mohammad Hamad Azzan Al Mazrouqi, Director General of the Western Region Development Council, welcomed ENEC as a partner of the Western region.
Job opportunities
“The reason so many countries around the world are turning to nuclear energy to diversify their energy supply is because nuclear energy has proven to be a safe, clean, reliable and cost efficient source of electricity,” said Al Hammadi.
“The ENEC programme will provide the critical energy needed to power the growth of industries and business across the UAE.”
The UAE’s nuclear energy industry will also provide thousands of high-value career opportunities for decades to come. Current estimates are that the programme will need between 2,100 and 2,300 employees by 2020, with 60 per cent of them being UAE nationals.
“The UAE’s nuclear energy programme is one of the largest and most exciting projects in the country and we are hoping to attract the highest calibre of professionals to join the programme. Just 20 per cent of the jobs in the nuclear industry require specialist nuclear energy knowledge. We need experts from all areas of engineering, security, finance, HR and ICT to run this programme,” Al Hammadi said.
